Featured National Irish Potato and Onion Stakeholder’s Seminar
The National Irish Potato Expansion Programme is part of the Government's overall strategy to enhance Jamaica's food and nutrition capacity with the aim of reducing imports, becoming self–sufficient and providing more income for our farmers.

Since the Programme's inception, there have been significant increases in the local supply of table Irish potatoes from that of 32% production in 2008 to 99% of demand in 2017.  Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commercial Agriculture and Fisheries – Hon. JC Hutchinson made this announcement while addressing farmers at the Irish Potato and Onion Production Stakeholder's Seminar held Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Hounslow in St Elizabeth to commence the 2017-2018 planting season of the tuber.

In addition, the Minister said that an agreement had been secured between the Ministry (Plant Quarantine and Plant Inspection Division) and the Cayman Islands for export of Irish Potato, inclusive of other agricultural inputs under the pre-clearance facility.  The export arrangement with the Cayman Islands is expected to enhance Government's overall thrust for the expansion and development of the Irish potato industry in Jamaica.
