As Jamaica continues to face hot and dry conditions, the St. Mary Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) parish office says it is targeting farmers with irrigation systems for seeds distribution, in a bid to drive agricultural production.

Speaking with JIS News during the recent Environmental and Physical Planning Committee meeting at the St. Mary Municipal Corporation, Deputy Parish Manager at St. Mary RADA, Dr. Dailion Robinson-White, said that production in the parish is being impacted by dry weather conditions.

“Production is down now [because of] the drought, so it doesn’t make sense that we give farmers seeds to plant and there is no water. What we are doing presently is selecting farmers who have irrigation systems. Once they have irrigation systems, they are the ones that are going to be prioritised. Persons who normally depend on rainfall, if you approach them, they say they are not planting because ‘time dry’,” Dr. White said.
