RADA and Virginia State University Partnership
The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and Virginia State University (VSU) have strengthened their collaborative efforts to enhance small ruminant production in Jamaica and are actively exploring future partnerships in various agricultural sectors. This partnership underscores a mutual commitment to knowledge exchange and technical expertise to uplift small farmers and the agriculture sector as a whole.
VSU has extended its support to RADA by providing kits designed to assist Livestock Officers in delivering improved services to farmers. This partnership will also include specialized training in the latest methodologies for small ruminant management, equipping officers with up-to-date knowledge and tools to better serve farmers across Jamaica. A significant component of this initiative has focused on managing and controlling internal parasites, with capacity-building sessions held for Livestock Officers and farmers alike.
Looking forward, RADA and VSU have agreed to expand their collaboration into new fields such as nutraceuticals, hydroponics, advanced technologies, product development, and marketing strategies specifically tailored for small farmers. To aid in knowledge dissemination, the partners are currently developing a series of short, informative videos that showcase best practices in small ruminant production, providing accessible guidance to farmers.
The collaboration will continue in 2025, with further training sessions planned to refine Livestock Officers’ skills in the latest industry practices. RADA officers will receive additional kits next year, reinforcing the resources available to them and enabling them to deliver higher-quality support to Jamaica's small ruminant farmers. This partnership between RADA and VSU holds promise for strengthening Jamaica's agricultural sector through innovation, education, and a shared vision for sustainable farming practices.
